Why I Love to Hear From Clients and Why You Should Too

By Glenn Ebersole I love to hear from my clients (and my business associates, fiends, et al) because I value their feedback. One of my favorite questions is a simple one, but one that yields great value to me. I love to ask, What do you think? about any number of items and then listen carefully to the response. Over the 35 years in my professional life, I am still amazed at how many businesses and individuals will tell me that they know what their customers think & want. Yet, when I challenge them and inquire if they actually asked their clients or customers, they say NO very often. Not asking for, not encouraging and not valuing feedback is a huge mistake. No matter what business or organization you are in; getting feedback from your customers & clients is a critical success factor. No matter how good or great you are, you always can be better by learning from feedback. In asking for feedback I want to and need to know how I am doing. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch constantly asked people he met on the streets - How am I doing? I believe in striving for continuous improvement and therefore we each need to know our own strengths and weaknesses so we can improve and grow personally and professionally. And then we need to take action! When we hear from our clients and customers and truly listen with an open mind, we actually receive an opportunity to find out what their problems are so we can help solve the problems and return to use our services and products again. And in this way we can grow our own businesses. Clients and customers appreciate the opportunity to share their feelings and will view you in a positive way for seeking honest feedback. Their feedback provides you with an opportunity to improve client loyalty, satisfaction and your bottom line. I really believe that asking for feedback and then following-up in a positive manner is one of the most effective techniques to retain your clients and customers. Three Tips On Starting Your Antique Collection

By Dakota Caudilla Tip 1: Understanding antiques In strict antique-speak, an antique is any collectable item that is seventy to one-hundred years old. Newer items can also be quite valuable; if you know how to pick them. In all instances, a collectible item has value if someone, somewhere, wants to buy it. Just remember: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. You may already know what you want to start collecting, but finding your antique niche means doing the relevant research first. For every item–furniture, clothing, books, or other odd collectibles–there is a general code of understanding as to their value in dollars. In order to be a successful antique collector you need to learn about the era in which you item was made, and what this means about its value. Tip 2: Understanding the antique market Whether you are interested in building a collection of Victorian furniture or vintage baby clothing one of the best places to start is the Internet. Use the search engine of your choice to begin researching your antique niche from the comfort of your own home. Or you may like to log onto eBay: eBay offers a great atmosphere to get a feel for what is valuable, what isn’t and how much things are selling for. In eBay search for something like “antique” and “silver” or “leather” and see what the search brings up. Watch a few of these items for a few days. Note the price, item details, or use the eBay interface to ask questions about the piece you are watching: age, condition, previous owner, etc. Once you get an idea of what is on offer, how people buy and how much people are willing to pay for an item, you may like to head off to markets, antique stores and shows where you can engage other enthusiasts or shop owners into discussion. Tip 3: Determining what to collect Choosing your antique niche is more about what interests you; it also depends on how deep your pockets are. Try to budget a certain amount of your income per month to see how much you can spend. Also, ask yourself how quickly you want to start building your antique collection. If you have lots to spend you may choose to locate items in mint condition. If you have less to spend you may go after items in less than mint condition. It’s always best to research before you buy. In all cases, try to learn as much as you can about the certain type of collectible or antique: where it comes from, the style or era, and even, the maker or artist or designer. Be it silverware or clothing or furniture or paintings, the more you know about the items you choose to collect the better you’ll be able to judge its value. Otherwise you’ll just have to take other people’s word for it. Dakota Caudilla, journalist, and website builder Dakota Caudilla lives in Texas. Disability Insurance Benefits

By Timothy Moore As the publisher of a website devoted to disability issues, and as one who receives occasional mail from claimants, one thing stands out amazingly loud and clear: too many disability claimants are waiting way too long to get their applications going. In fact, it’s almost stunning how many people are out there in their forties, fifties, even in their late fifties, with significant physical and/or mental impairments and yet have not filed for social security disability or ssi. I don’t use the word stunning lightly, either. In the last few years, I’ve been, in varying capacties, in daily contact with disability claimants (several thousand). Even prior to becoming a disability examiner, I had been a medicaid caseworker, taking applications for medicaid that would go to disability determination services for a medical determination Yet, not in any of that time, did I get a clear picture of how many disabled individuals there must be who are not pursuing their benefits. Why do so many people put off filing for benefits? There are lots of different reasons, I suppose, and one that I can’t discount is that a certain percentage of individuals have probably been intimidated by all the “bad stuff” they’ve heard about the program (high denial rates, files and paperwork getting lost, rude social security employees, etc, etc). However, I have the strong impression that many potential claimants either do not file or put off filing because A. they feel embarassed about filing or B. they want to go back to work and are truly hoping their condition will improve to the point that this will become possible. This is what I would tell a friend, relative, neighbor, and anyone who reads this: if you believe you are disabled, file your application ASAP. Because if your medical condition does indeed prevent you from returning to work, any embarassment you feel over filing will weigh very little against your immediate financial concerns. And if you’re hoping that your condition will improve to the point where you can work again, that’s a great attitude…but what if it doesn’t. You’re always safer and wiser if you hedge your bets. The federal disability system in the U.S. is presently in a “slow-mode” meltdown and (that’s just my opinion) and right now, start to finish, it can take up to three years to get through the whole process (initial claim, reconsideration, alj hearing). So, don’t THINK about filing. Just FILE. You may have read in the news that the social security disability system is slated for improvement soon. Again, this is just my opinion, but don’t count on it. The reform proposals being advocated by the current SSA Commissioner may arguably make things a lot worse for claimants and the process in general. Commissioner Barnhart’s proposals will certainly make the SSD-SSI system more hostile and adversarial to claimants. And there’s good reason to believe that her proposals will not even speed things up. They may, in fact, have quite the opposite effect. Please remember that this is the same administration that thought it was ok NOT to pay overtime to people working 50 hours a week as long as they would classified as “working supervisors”. It’s also the same group that thinks it’s ok for individual citizens to be barred from debt relief while individuals occupying the ivory towers (I’m thinking of “The Donald” here) seem to be filing for bankruptcy protection every time you turn around. I will leave you with this thought. It was under the current Social Security Administration Commissioner that HPI was instituted. This was an efficiency program that, instead of bringing efficiency to the disability hearing process actually slowed things down by at least a FACTOR OF THREE (hearings in north carolina, for example, used to take at most 5 months to get—now they take up to 15-24 months, depending on what hearing office you have to deal with). To reiterate: If you are disabled, don’t think about filing. Just file and get it done. The author of this article is Timothy Moore, who, in addition to being a former food stamp caseworker, medicaid caseworker and AFDC caseworker, is a former disability claims examiner. Finding Freelance Projects

By Sebastian Schneider Being a freelancer is a tough job for anyone. Whether you are a writer or a web designer you know that the competition is fierce and you must always be on the look out for more jobs when working on one. This is part of the course when freelancing. Most often there is no stability or guarantee when freelance is involved. You are hired on a project basis and will be kicked to the curb once the project is complete unless you happen to earn another project right away which is rare to say the least. To help fill the gap between those needing skilled labor and the freelancers that provide the labor there are several web sites that have sprung up. These sites allow employers to post projects of a wide variety and then the freelancers can bid on those projects. This has become an effective tool in maintaining a steady flow of work for the freelancer, but there are several downfalls to some of these sites. For one thing, there is normally a fee that is charged for using the service. How much and how often varies by site. Normally you will pay a monthly membership fee as a freelancer wanting to bid on projects. This fee can be as high as eighty dollars on some sites, but the average is twenty. One should be careful when working with a site like this as it will be much harder to turn a profit when you consider the amount of money you have spent on the monthly fees. There are also sites that work on a commission basis. This works by paying a percentage of the money that you earned from a project to the site for successfully bidding and completing a project. The commission charged is different with every site and averages around 10%. This system of payment is a lot more popular as the freelancer can simply add the commission amount to their bid to ensure they are getting the amount they need to complete the project. The services offered by these sites are normally wonderful. A project manager is a great tool for tracking the projects that you have bid on and those that you have won. This ensures that nothing gets swept under the rug and forgotten about thus tarnishing your reputation. Other sites offer safe payment resources. These payment options are basically escrow accounts where the money is held until the project is completed and approved. This works to provide security for both parties. The employer does not release the money until the project has been completed and approved. The freelancer is guaranteed to get paid for all their hard work. There are some sites that offer all of these services and remain free for the freelance worker and the employer. They maintain the site through advertising and do not charge a commission or a monthly fee. This has become a very popular occurrence as freelancers can earn more money without having to spend so much in the process. If you no longer want to pay commissions or fees in terms of bidding on projects and using the service, visit the next generation of freelance portals, WorkAsFreelancer.com. Besides a lot of features, the service is free of any commissions and fees from signing up to signing the contract with the project creator. Will You Be On Your Own On Valentines Day?

By Dawn H Robertshaw Nobody likes to be on their own on Valentines Day. It is one of the days in the calendar that people are reminded to love and cherish one another. Some people may choose to be on their own and others may not have the choice because of circumstances surrounding their work and family. But, there are still ways you can celebrate Valentines Day when you are apart. If you and your partner work in different towns and you have to travel to see each other maybe only at the weekend and holidays you will probably be spending Valentines Day apart. You could celebrate Valentines Day on the weekend when you meet up and make it an extra special one. On the day, you could telephone each other and have a long conversation or perhaps send your partner an intimate email telling them your plans for the weekend. The suspense will keep them guessing until you next see each other. If you are on your own because your partner had to go away on a business trip at the last minute, or because they work shifts, (these include a variety of professions, for example; nurses, fire fighters, oil rig workers and police officers), you may feel disappointed. But, you could make arrangements to have a meal or spend a romantic day together before Valentines Day and think of each other on the day. If your partner is in the forces you may know that they will be going away around Valentines Day, you can make your plans in advance. Take them out to their favorite restaurant or cook them their favorite meal and exchange gifts. As a special treat for their return arrange for someone to have the kids, book the two of you into a hotel and have a romantic weekend away. If you are on your own because you choose to be contact some of your single friends and arrange a singles party, or invite a friend out for a meal, go to the movies or spend a night in having a take out and a bottle of wine. If you are looking for a date, put your profile up on some of the online dating sites. There are lots to choose from. Alternatively, consider holding a party and invite each of your single friends. Let your hair down and play some party games, it can be lots of fun particularly of there is someone in the room that you have liked for a while and have not plucked up the courage to speak to them. The games may be a good ice breaker and you never know, you may find that special someone. If you do not at least you have had a good night. Finally, just because you are on your own either by choice or circumstances you do not need to be sad and unhappy. Valentines Day only happens once a year. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you enjoy it. Dawn Robertshaw has written numerous articles and ebooks on coping with life in the 21st century. Are Men and Women Really from Different Planets?

By CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd Are men really from Mars, and women from Venus?’what women want,’ is still left unanswered to men. Even when we reflect upon the 2000 film, What Women Want - lead character, Nick Marshall (played by Mel Gibson) seems to have all the answers. But does he really? Is it an inevitable fact that men and women are predestined not to clearly understand one another? I vividly recall a playtime conversation between my son and daughter when they were just preschoolers. In amusement, I watched as my son took his metal matchbox cars and drove them all over his roadmap carpet. ‘Vroom…vroom…’ he mumbled. And there beside him, sat my three-year old daughter, tightly clasping her little fingers around her own two cars. Adamantly, she waved them in front of her older brother’s face and attempted to make her cars have ‘dialogue’ with his cars. After a few moments of no response, (other than ‘vroom, vroom’), my daughter quickly became frustrated. She folded her arms and marched over to me, “…Mom, Ryan isn’t playing right,” she said matter-of-factly. Initially, I wanted to chuckle but I knew she was quite serious. I asked her, “…what do you mean - he is not playing right?” She blew out a huff and responded, “…I want his cars to talk to my cars and all he does is crash his cars into mine!” Peering over her head, I saw that my son was unnerved and oblivious to his sister’s obvious irritation. While she stood there with absolute disgust, he continued playing with his metal vehicles. It was at that point that I let out a little giggle, and I gave her a simple answer, “…sweetie, boys like to play and girls like to talk.” It may not have been the answer she was seeking, but this tiny event has shed some light to a wide-spectrum issue in two, very different sexes. Throughout life, I have personally learned that men are action-oriented, whereas women are interaction-oriented. And from personal experience, I have seen that many of these attributes are innate traits stemming back to prehistoric times where males were considered hunter/gatherers and females, considered nurturers. While human evolution has dramatically evolved with modern technology; longer, healthier life spans and overall improved communication skills - it seems that men and women still do not speak the same language. Inherently, men use interactions to fulfill essential purposes: entertainment, information communication, task completion, and other related needs. Women on the other hand, prefer to interact to deepen levels of relationships - to better understand their counterpart, or to bring about resolution through interaction. In other words, when men and women communicate, we hear the same dialogue, but we perceive and practice verbal communications very differently. As with the case of my own two children, my son was absolutely clueless to my daughter’s aggravation because he was preoccupied with his own actions. My daughter, however, was intent on interacting with him, and could not understand why he was ignoring her. This incident clearly demonstrates the concise perceptual differences between males and females. I have heard women tell me, `…he doesn’t understand me,’ or `…he’s not listening to me…’ And men, will rebuke, `…I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ It’s not that men don’t listen to women - it’s the fact that they are not hearing precisely what is being said; or perhaps they do not adequately comprehend the meaning behind the words. Additionally, because women are very interactive creatures, conversation may be invoked while men are actively engaged in a specific event, work or other project. When men are actively doing something, they are often so concentrated with their project that they simply do not hear a word. Women, however, may falsely perceive this inaction as disregarded communication. And then it’s back to square one - `…why is he ignoring me?” To find resolve in relationships, both men and women have to realize that while we all must communicate for progressive action, it is also essential to understand that women and men clearly think in different terms at different times. Before we jump the gun, and imagine the worst of our human counterparts, we must think about what was said, and in what manner it was said as well. Tone of voice plays a vital role in determining our various forms of communication and interaction with one another. If we do not practice, or we are not perceptive to tone of dialogue, as well as the words themselves, then it will obviously be mistaken for a complete different communication altogether. In addition, when individuals do not automatically respond or don’t hear others, it does not necessarily mean that the individual is being disrespectful or rejecting. Because we are only all too human, we have to accept that people make verbal and non-verbal mistakes that may or may not create tension in a relationship. If we begin to understand this is part of human nature, realize that we speak in different context, and comprehend that silence is not always a form of rejection, maybe then, both men and women will be able to reach each other on a positive level of interaction. 4/2005 Are Men and Women Really from Different Planets? 10 Tips for Successful Rose Planting

By Kathy Burns-Millyard Planting roses isn’t actually complicated, as long as you have some good advice and tips to start with… 1. Check with your local gardening center or florist for the best type of roses to grow in you climate. If you are a novice, you should look fo? disease resistant types of roses because they require a lot less maintenance. 2. When planting roses, you want to pick a spot that is well lit in the morning. You also want an area that is sunlit for at least 6 hours a day. Roses need a great deal of light if they are to grow properly. If you live in a really hot climate though, you’ll probably get the best results by not planting your roses in direct sunlight. 3. Pick an area that has plenty of well drained soil. Great soil has a PH level where the amount of acid in the soil is at about 5.5-7.0. You can get a testing kit for your soil at any garden center. 4. Organic matter like manure or lime helps to nourish the roots of your roses. You should soak the roots in water or puddle clay for many minutes, and cut off any root’s ends that are broken. 5. The first 3-4 weeks after planting your roses, you should water them often. Usually this is when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. Roses need a lot of hydration and food to remain healthy. 6. Four weeks after planting, you should start soaking the bed every 2 weeks or so. You should do this in the morning for the best results. 7. Begin fertilization approximately 3 months after planting. Use 3-6 inches of mulch to control the moisture, temperature, and to stops weeds from coming up. Mulch also helps to lock in the vital nutrients your roses need in order to remain healthy. 8. Planting in the Spring is the best. 9. You want to plant your roses in an area that is well circulated with air. Your roses will not grow in an enclosed or tight area. 10. Dig a hole that is two times bigger than the amount of space that your roses take up. It makes it easier to plant them and creates a spaced area for them to grow with freedom. Poor circulation for your roses can cause fungal diseases. Using a larger hole also makes it easier for you to pull them up later and pot them if youd like. 2004, Kathy Burns-Millyard and Garden-Source.com This article is provided courtesy of http://www.Garden-Source.com - You may freely reprint this article on your website or in your newsletter provided this courtesy notice and the author name and URL remain intact. Secured Personal Loan - A Cheap Loan for All Your Needs

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=V._Jain]V. Jain Lenders offer loans for almost any purpose. You name it, they have it. You can obtain a car loan to buy a car, a home loan to buy a house, a debt consolidation loan for the purpose of debt consolidation, a holiday loan to pay for a holiday trip, and so on. Besides these, you may need money to fulfill some other needs for which you can obtain personal loans. Personal loans can also be used for the above mentioned purposes. Personal loans are usually unsecured. However, lenders also offer secured personal loans. The main benefit of a secured personal loan is that it carries a low rate of interest. You have to offer your property as a security to obtain a secured personal loan. This reduces the risk for the lender since he can repossess your property if you default in repayment. Because of this, he can afford to charge a low rate of interest. Besides a low rate of interest, [http://www.loans11.co.uk/secured-personal-loan.html ]secured personal loans have many other advantages. Lenders offer flexible repayment terms on secured loans, i.e. the loan terms can be adjusted to the borrowers requirements. A longer loan period reduces the amount of monthly installments which becomes affordable for borrowers with a low salary. Another advantage of secured personal loans is that they are easily available. Since they are secured against property, lenders are more than willing to offer such loans. You can take out a secured personal loan against the security of your house. Such a loan is also known as a homeowner loan. In this type of loan, your house is at the risk of repossession. Therefore, you must go for this loan only when you are confident that you will be able to repay the loan as per the loan terms. This loan is meant for those who are looking for a large amount of loan at a low rate of interest. If you are looking for a short term loan of a small amount, then you should go for an unsecured loan. In this situation, it is not worth putting your house at a risk. Maintaining the Compost Pile

By Enid Edginton Maintaining the compost pile does not have to be a lot of work. Basically any pile of organic pile will eventually rot into fertilizer. It is just a question of how long it takes. One key to maintaining your compost pile is to get it off to a good start in the first place. This means locating it in a level well-drained area. Also keep in mind that if you dispense with the freestanding outdoor compost pile in the first place and opt to put the waste in the bin you will save yourself a lot of work. This way you dont have to worry about the compost becoming to wet. If it does become too wet it may become infested with bugs or viruses or reek enough that your neighbors will start complaining. A big part of maintaining the compost pile is keeping it accessible to your kitchen. It must be fed generously and regularly with kitchen scraps. Keeping too much vegetable and fruit matter in your kitchen can start to smell so locating the compost pile near the door of your kitchen is a good idea. This is because if the compost pile is too far away you might forget to use it. Compost piles have a bit of heat going on inside of their core. This is due to all of the enzymes and aerobic activity inside transforming the waste into soil fertilizer and soil conditioner. If you live in a colder climate then locate the pile in a sunny spot to trap solar heat. This will help to keep your compost pile biologically active. One hint with regards to this is to locate the compost pile in a place where it is sheltered from strong or very chilly northern winds. If you live in a really hot arid climate you might actually have to water the compost pile a bit. At the very least keep it in a shady, sheltered spot so that it does not dry out and blow away. Anaerobic organisms that create compost cannot thrive in a desert climate so you will need to pay extra attention to maintain the compost heap as it will not likely degrade very quickly by itself. In fact it may not degrade at all. The inability of the desert climate to create compost is part of the reason that nothing grows in a desert in the first place. It is also easier to maintain the compost if you build it over earth rather than over concrete or asphalt. This is because the earthworms that you want to lure to your compost heap dont live in concrete and asphalts. Also earthworms, beneficial microbes and beneficial bacteria will migrate up and down the compost heap helping it to degrade and bringing it nutrients. Locating your compost pile over earth also gives the compost heap better drainage. Unlike concrete or asphalt the earth can also help a pile of compost retain moisture so it does not dry out and blow away. To keep everyone happy including the neighbors try to locate a big compost pile in a place where both its sometimes-unpleasant odors and visually displeasing aspects are well hidden perhaps behind a shed or a bush. It is truly difficult to fail when it comes to composting. This is because it really is a natural organic process. If you must remember two things about composting it is to a) keep feeding it scraps and b) keep turning it over to air it out. If you maintain the compost by habitually doing these two things you cant help but succeed in produce the fertilizer that is perfect for your garden. Low Carb Dieting - The Lifelong Solution to Staying Thin?

By Danna Schneider Low carb dieting has become a popular way to lose weight quickly, and has even become the preferred lifestyle for thousands of health and weight conscious people. The question is, are low carb diets a realistic lifetime regimen, and are they really healthy? Well, here’s the general consensus: Hats off to low carb dieters, for they have found the lifelong key to weight maintenance, heart health and peak physical condition. When most people hear the term “low carb diet”, they think of fanatical menus of bacon, eggs, cheese and other “zero carb” foods that, prior to the carbohydrate diet revolution, were considered high fat, artery clogging foods. In short, the typical low carb fare was a long list of high fat no-no’s up until the low carb revolution, and pastas and breads were hailed as “low to no fat”, so people were piling on the carbs in favor of less fat. We’ve come a long way from this extreme school of thought, with the advent and teaching of a more healthy and balanced low carb dieting lifestyle. This new school of thought does not preach a zero tolerance for sugars and starches, but rather just making smarter choices in carbohydrate consumption, and a higher protein to carbohydrate ratio, with a healthy but moderate dash of unsaturated fat. This new “moderation” method of low carb dieting has proven to be a huge asset for thousands of people suffering from obesity and excess weight. Many have adopted the moderation philosophy into their permanent eating habits and lifestyle with great long term success and permanent weight loss and maintenance. Sure, most of us low carbers will have those moments of weakness, especially around the holidays, and overdo it on the sugars and starches, but it’s actually pretty easy to get right back in the swing of things again.
